Scribble Picnic (Fox & Apologies!)

Hello! First off, to my wonderful Sunday Sketches peeps...I am SO SORRY! I left town unexpectedly and simply forgot to schedule my post for our weekly art co-op. For those of you who don't know, the older sister I never met found our family and I'm currently in southern Kentucky meeting her and visiting other family members I've not seen in 9+ years! I'm here through this coming Sunday, so hopefully, I'll get something posted and get us back on track.

Above is my contribution for this week's Scribble Picnic theme, FOX. Due to being on the road, I sketched this little guy in my 6"x6" sketchbook and colored it in with my set of Tombow brush pens. I love how they give off the feeling of a watercolor illustration. This morning, I spent some time with my niece at a fabulous coffee shop here Campbellsville, KY doing art and it was utterly fun. In fact, here's a peek at her contribution to Scribble Picnic. She did a wonderful job!

OK. It's 77 here in Kentucky and perfect weather for Michael's picnic. I'm grabbing my flip-flops and picnic basket....see you all very soon - and save me some cherry pie!!

Scribble Picnic (Fireflies)

One of my favorite memories as a little girl was catching fireflies (aka lightning bugs) in mason jars with my dad and brothers in our neighbor's backyard. Some of my summer memories were good and precious - this was one of them. I can't tell you just how much I love them and all the joy they bring to my heart. They fascinated me as a child. I sat for hours next to my father on the picnic table, watching what felt like a million of them, lighting up the night, bringing some sort of hope and promise to my heart as a little girl.

I couldn't think of anything more appropriate for Michael's Scribble Picnic theme - jars. Say, I have an idea! Why don't we all hang out for a while with our own jars and catch a few fireflies....gazing up into the midnight sky, dreaming?...

Sunday Sketches (Strawberry Sponge Cake)

We've a busy weekend as it is Father's Day. Michael plans to have breakfast with the youngest son and then in the afternoon, a cook-out with everyone to celebrate. It's extra-special this year as my step-daughter's husband will be enjoying his very first Father's Day with beautiful 8-month old twins!!

This quick illustration came about due to a photo Michael forwarded to me of a scrumptious looking Strawberry Victoria Sponge cake packed with cream. We had a delicious one made for our summer English Tea Party last weekend so wasn't aware he was wanting another one! In lieu of another real cake, I sketched out this darling guy who's about to enjoy his personal sponge cake for him instead. :)

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend! I'll catch up later in the evening. Happy SS!

Scribble Picnic (Little Women...)

I tackled this week's Scribble Picnic theme (BIRDS) a bit differently by incorporating it deeper into an illustration. Uh huh. Can you find it? Do you see it weaved into one of the darling dresses designed for these sweet sisters? I provided a couple of up-close snapshots so you can view the outfits a bit more.

It was quite enjoyable putting this piece together as I took extra time out in exploring colors, patterns, hairstyles and more. You can see a bit of this in the last photo posted above. A few days ago, I started illustrating book characters. The first was dear Anne Shirley in "Anne of Green Gables" and today is Louisa May Alcott's, "Little Women". Do you have a favorite book? Let me know when you leave your comment below and I'll see about illustrating it over the next week or so.

OK, I'm grabbing my favorite picnic blanket while the sun is still shining, and racing to meet the rest of the gang over at Michael's backyard. Happy Scribble Picnic!

Sunday Sketches (English Summer Tea Party)

Just a quick little note tonight as it's already late and I'm exhausted...well, we both are. Today we hosted our 2nd annual summer English Tea Party and it was absolutely wonderful! Michael made his famous lemon shortbread and was in charge of all the traditional English sandwiches. For me, I made my popular traditional English raisin scones and a savory leek and tomato quiche'. Also available for our guests were mini salmon cakes with feta cheese and spinach tucked inside and a fabulous homemade Victoria Sponge cake by our favorite local bakeshop, The Little Bird Bakeshop.

Above is a doodle I tossed together prior to our party preparations. It's a bit rough but I so love how she turned out for being thrown together at the last minute. Hee

Michael and I will share more photos in the coming week of our party but until then, we are off to bed for some much needed rest! I'm looking forward to catching up with everyone. Happy SS!

Scribble Picnic (Grabbling Brook Post Office)

I love what we all find in our picnic baskets each week here at Scribble Picnic. Oh gosh, from sweet goodies to new friends - I love it all! Isn't that what picnics are all about?

This week I've decided to venture back off into my usual illustration style and have created my very own woodland post office called, "Grabbling Brook" for all of the local bunnies to mail their letters and parcels. Hee. Oh gosh, it turned out way better than anticipated! Above is just a snippet of the full illustration. When it's all completed, I'll reveal the entire painting and its magical wonder.

OK....off I go with my picnic basket to catch up with Michael and his lot....and grabbing an umbrella along the way. The grey skies have rolled in with thunder here and there. By golly, let's hope none of us get wet this afternoon!

Sunday Sketches (Oh, Hello there!)

(Oh, Hello there! #dailydoodle)

As you know, Michael and I've had a lot going on these past several weeks and there's still yet one other thing that's happened we've yet to share with you! Well, actually, it involves me! Are you ready? I have a big sister!!

All my life I've known about an older sister from my mother's previous marriage but have (unfortunately) never met her and honestly, never thought I would. Several years ago I tried to find she and my older brother, but was unsuccessful. I'm THRILLED to say she found me! (Thus where this illustration came from.)

Many, many tears have been shed and my heart is overjoyed! I look forward to sharing more about this story in the future. For now, please celebrate with me in this wonderful and beautiful reunion!!!
